Hello! Today’s review is on Crystal Andrus Morissette’s The Emotional Edge*. I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review, so here goes:
This book is worth reading.
Morissette starts off by introducing the reader to their emotional age, and this helps guide the reader through the rest of the advice in the book. The three emotional ages are Parent, Child, and Adult, with Adult being the balanced archetype to strive for in one’s life. If you’re not sure which one you identify with (I’m a Parent archetype), there is a quiz near the beginning to help you figure it out. Once armed with that information, the advice that comes later for each archetype will start to ring true for the reader and help the reader develop into an empowered Adult, which is a healthy balance between the impulsive Child and selfless Parent.
After you learn more about your emotional age, Morissette adds some information about communication styles and how to make those work for you and how to move up from passive all the way to peaceful. While they sound similar, Morissette shows how they are very different.
Throughout the book, she offers questions that one can (and probably should) answer in order to guide them on their path to becoming more of an Adult. The questions are thoughtful and can be applied to a variety of situations that may arise.
At the end of the book, there is a chapter called “What’s My Purpose?” where Morissette asks the reader what their passion is. Many of us are in careers that don’t really “fit” but we tolerate them because we have mortgages and bills to pay. She analyzes each archetype when it comes to careers and money and ends on a very positive note.
I recommend giving this book a quick preliminary read and then tackling it a second time with a pen and journal to answer the questions and take notes as you go. I certainly will be!
